Let your laptop catch the thief

Inside the latest version of the Mac operating system there’s a great feature called “Back to My Mac”. Using your .Mac account, it enables you to log on to it from another Mac on the internet. Designed as a sort of simple VPN, to pick up files you might have left on a machine in the office or at home, it came in very handy for Kait Duplaga, who works in an Apple store, when her Mac was stolen in a burglary following a party she and her flatmates had held. Two weeks later, a colleague noticed her Mac was online, and txt’d her. She logged onto her machine, took it over and snapped a photo using Photo Booth, a free application that takes photos using the Mac’s built-in webcam.

When one of her roomates recognised the culprits the police moved it and recovered the stolen property.
