You can’t adopt someone else’s vision for ICT

VisionIt rather worries me that in Graveyard Guru’s latest post he says, “I’ve copied the following from the Becta site (Leadership and Management > Vision), which I’ll then change to suit our school and the attitudes and beliefs of the staff”, as a seeming solution to the problem that the school doesn’t have a real vision for ICT. Real visions have ownership, are shared as a collective whole, not only by staff, but pupils, parents and carers and all stakeholders in the school. To understand your vision, you have to be part of it, to believe it can bring about change and that is it achievable. You might use others’ work, or even your own philosophy,  as a checklist or as a starting point for discussion, but simply to adapt something will never work. What if “the attitudes and beliefs of the staff” are not what you expect? What if certain members of staff don’t understand, or are not bothered, but clearly ’signing-up’ provides the path of least resistance? How far will your implementation plan go then?

Don’t be blinkered, visions are difficult to obtain, they take hard-work and persistence if they are to be meaningful and produce real change.

  1. Are you serious? You must have an appalling perception of me to believe I would do what you’re describing!

Okay, so I haven’t outlined the complete process I will be going through and all I’ve said is that “I’ll then change to suit our school and the attitudes and beliefs of the staff”, but give me some credit! What kind of Mickey-Mouse ICT subject leader do you take me for?

Anyway, I’ll edit the post to reflect your comments…

  4. Left as a comment on Graveyard Guru’s blog post:

Hi, I’m sorry that I seem to have upset you, but my own blog post was a general comment and not directed at you personally. Indeed, I would have left a comment on your blog if my intention was to criticise you personally rather than make a general comment about how a vision for ICT might or might be best approached by others reading my blog. By linking to your post, I’m simply using what you said to illustrate a point, and as far as I can see, I’ve quoted you accurately. If you did not convey your meaning in your post, then this is not my fault. I also have difficulty in how you can take this so personally when you have decided to make this blog anonymous. How can you assume I have little regard for you, when you chose to write behind a veil? As to me being “someone somewhere” it is quite clear who I am, I say so on my blog.

  5. Thanks for the reply, Gareth - I’ve answered your comment on my blog… you might also be interested in my next post (Part 2!).
