In 1992, I was involved in an exciting ICT and learning conference with this title. I'm assuming that Steve Heppell, who was one of the main organisers for the conference, came up with this phrase to express the theme of the conference. Although a great deal has happened in education since, we've still got a long way to go to make this question irrelevant.

Students may also do it their own way. Never mind which VLE their teachers/school/local authorities prefer. Generation I, those born after 1992, are likely to have spent a considerable amount of time and energy developing their enthusiasms on systems completely outside the schools/colleges reach. Flickr, facebook, friendfeed, twitter make your own list, young people may even be subscribing to courses without consulting anyone. If you are going to ask a Teacher to invest a lot of time building anything in some VLE, one of the first questions they should ask is how do I get my information out, so I don't have to repeat this whole process. Generation I will ask the same question. How many VLEs, E Portfolios, Individual Learning Plans have any kind of portability whatsoever? Who cares if Moodle is todays or tomorrows winner?

That's why I always try to include an element of experiencing the VLE from the perspective of the learner before attempting to help people understand what it means to the teacher/tutor.

It's the old problem of teachers replicating (as a teacher) their own experiences (as a learner). We need to grab them in the teacher training institutions and break that cycle.

Me :-) And we'd have more fun, too!

With luck they'd also manage to teach me something - one of the main reasons I teach at City is that it keeps me lively.
